Reza Moridi, Minister of Research and Innovation
|—–||In February 2013, Premier Wynne appointed Reza Moridi Minister of Research and Innovation.
Representing the riding of Richmond Hill, Minister Moridi was first elected to the Ontario legislature in 2007 and re-elected in 2011. He has served as the Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities, the Minister of Research and Innovation and the Minister of Energy.
Minister Moridi is an award-winning scientist, engineer, educator, business leader and community activist. Moridi has lived with his family in Richmond Hill since 1991.
Educated in the UK, he obtained a PhD from Brunel University. He is a Chartered Engineer and Chartered Physicist.
Minister Moridi worked as a CEO and Chair in the electrical industry and his career in academia included serving as the Dean of the School of Sciences, Chair of the Physics Department, University Chief Librarian and member of the Senate at Alzahra University in Tehran. Prior to his entry to politics, Minister Moridi had a 17-year career at the Radiation Safety Institute of Canada where he was the Vice-President and Chief Scientist.
For his contributions to improving the understanding of nuclear materials, radiation and health physics, Minister Moridi received the Education and Communication Award from the Canadian Nuclear Society and the Fellow Award from the US Health Physics Society. He was also elected as a Fellow of the UK Institute of Physics and the UK Institution of Engineering and Technology for his contributions to physics and engineering.
Minister Moridi’s extensive political, business and scientific background provide him with the knowledge and experience needed to bridge academia with business and government. He understands first-hand that research is part of Ontario’s economic engine and he strongly believes the Ministry of Research and Innovation is key to building the economy of tomorrow.
John Ruffolo, Chief Executive Officer, OMERS Ventures
|—||Mr. Ruffolo is the Chief Executive Officer of OMERS Ventures, the venture arm of OMERS. OMERS Ventures invests in companies in the Technology, Media, and Telecommunications sectors.Prior to joining OMERS Ventures, Mr. Ruffolo was a Partner at Deloitte, as well as the Global Thought Leader, the Global Tax Leader and the Canadian Industry Leader for Deloitte’s Technology, Media and Telecommunications (TMT) practice and a member of Deloitte’s Board of Directors.-Mr. Ruffolo has over two decades of experience advising public and private companies around the world. Mr. Ruffolo has been recognized as one of the country’s leading clean-tech advisors. In addition, he has worked closely with a number of North America’s leading venture capital and private equity firms and has advised many of the companies in which they invest.-Mr. Ruffolo serves as Chair of the Canadian Venture Capital and Private Equity Association’s Government Relations Committee and is a member of its Executive Committee. He serves on the Board of Communitech. Mr. Ruffolo is on the board of the David Suzuki Foundation. Mr. Ruffolo is also Chair of the Corporate Advisory Committee for the Art Gallery of Ontario. He is a member of the Toronto chapter of the Young Presidents Organization.|
Parker MacDonell, Founding Member, Ohio TechAngel Fund & Board Member-Elect, Angel Capital Association
|—-||Parker MacDonell is a seasoned financial services and business executive whose personal mission includes helping others succeed in business. He assists business owners with capital formation, succession planning, goal setting and value creation. His goal is to help business owners through the next step in the growth of their enterprise and to remove obstacles that may stem from access to capital and funding.-Parker’s financial services career has combined commercial banking, angel investing and start-up business ventures. At Bank One, he led teams of retail, commercial and community bankers to serve their clients. At CFBank, he successfully launched the entry of the company into the Columbus market and built a base of satisfied clients. As a member of the Executive Committee of, and an investor in, the Ohio TechAngel Funds, Parker assists entrepreneurs with the growth of their emerging businesses. He is an active angel investor in seventeen companies and has been elected to the board of the Angel Capital Association. He co-founded a highly successful entertainment venture in Columbus and a Nashville-based publishing company. Parker has served on the boards of five for-profit companies, one of which had a successful liquidity event. He has also served the communities in which he’s lived and worked on the boards of ten not-for-profit organizations in the arts, workforce development, healthcare and other fields. Parker is a member of the Columbus Chamber Board of Directors and a past chair of its Small Business Council.Parker holds an undergraduate degree in music from Dartmouth College and a Master’s Degree in Public and Private Management from the Yale School of Management. He is an active musical performer, and the thrill of being on stage is exceeded only by the satisfaction of participating in a new venture and helping it succeed.|
Shannon MacDonald, Managing Partner, Deloitte
|—-||Shannon MacDonald enjoys working with private companies and governments. She has overseen Deloitte’s professional services presence in Atlantic Canada, has sat on the Executive of Deloitte nationally, has sat on the Board of Deloitte and has served as the firm’s national health care leader. She now works in Toronto with Deloitte, leading the firm’s work with the Government of Ontario and she sits on the Toronto Executive. Her experience includes over twenty years of public accounting and consulting services.
Shannon has served as the engagement partner for various Deloitte private company and public sector clients in Ontario and Atlantic Canada. She has conducted due diligence, external audit, risk management, internal audit and governance assignments for various entities. Shannon has also designed and delivered governance training and been an active member of the Institute of Corporate Directors and the Ontario Hospital Association’s Governance Centre for Excellence.
In a volunteer capacity, Shannon sats on the Board of Women’s College Hospital, the Board of Mount St. Vincent University, including the Audit Committee; she Chaired the Capital Campaign for the Canadian Cancer Society Nova Scotia Division, Daffodil Place Campaign; as Vice-Chair and Audit Comimittee Chair of The Greater Halifax Partnership; and currently sits on the Atlantic Provinces Economic Council. Shannon has championed Productivity improvement efforts in Atlantic Canada through sponsorship and involvement in incubation of new business, mentoring of start ups and development of entreprecurial curriculum development.
Shannon has a BBA from UPEI, a Chartered Accounting designation and a Masters of Health Science from University of Toronto. She has been recognized for two years as one of the Top 50 CEOs in Atlantic Canada and as one of Canada’s 100 Most Powerful Women.
Yuri Navarro, Executive Director at National Angel Capital Organization
|—-||Yuri Navarro is a strategy consultant with over five years of experience working with both government and businesses in the Ontario energy sector. As a Policy Advisor to the Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, Yuri was instrumental in developing the provincial strategy on energy conservation and smart grid under the Green Energy and Green Economy Act of 2008. As Policy Advisor and Chief of Staff to the Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Yuri focused on developing opportunities to benefit Ontario in the Energy, Mining, Bio-tech and Manufacturing sectors, while also overseeing the development of the government’s strategy for supporting Small and Medium Enterprises.In 2009, Yuri founded NAVY Global Consulting where he worked to help energy sector clients to commercialize their innovative energy solutions. As an advisor to Ryerson’s Centre for Urban Energy, Yuri has worked to set up the CUE’s business accelerator program to support energy sector entrepreneurs in commercializing their urban energy innovations.As the Executive Director at the National Angel Capital Organization, Yuri brings his unique mixture of public and private sector experience to help expand NACO’s role as the leading organization representing Canadian Angel Investors to both industry and government.|
